Kottiyoor is a small, sleepy town situated in the district of Kannur, Kerala. One of the famous sites here is the Kottiyoor Shiva temple also referred to as “Dakshina Kashi”. Situated on the banks of the river “Bavalipuzha” this temple has 2 sanctum sanctorum…one is the “Ikkare” Kottiyoor (Which in Malayalam Means near side of the river) and the other “Akkare” Kottiyoor (the far side of the river) situated amidst the Kottiyoor forest .
While the presiding deity in both the temples is lord Shiva, it is the Shiva lingam that is worshiped in both the places. The Akkare Kottiyoor temple is open only during June-July (Vaishakam months) while the Ikkare Kottiyoor temple is open throughout the year except during June-July (Vaishakam months).
During the ancient times Kottiyoor was a densely forested area and was inhabited by native people called as the “Kurichans”. Fishing, cattle rearing and paddy cultivation were the primary occupations of these native people.
Legend has it that one day a Kurichan during his daily routine through the forest, stops to sharpen his arrow on a uniquely shaped stone. Immediately he notices bleeding from the top of the stone. Bewildered he runs in a frenzy and reaches the “Padinjitta Illam”.The Namboodri there asks him about the happenings and the Kurichan narrates the incident of bleeding. It dawns upon the equally puzzled Namboodri that this is due to some divine power. He immediately informs the Mannanthala Nair chieftain ( Anju veetukar) ,who held suzerainty over that area and under their supervision the Namboodri conducts the necessary absolution's ,to stop the bleeding. The bleeding doesn’t stop despite all the extensive rituals. It was then that a person belonging to “Thiyya” community offers tender coconut and by using the nectar from the tender coconut the bleeding comes to a stop. That perhaps is the reason why tender coconuts are carried as offering even to this day at Akkare Kottiyoor, by pilgrims from “Thiyya “ community.
As always the case with any religious place, there are several other stories connected with it. Suffice it to say that Akkare Kottiyoor temple annual celebrations during the months of June-July offer specific privileges to all people belonging to different castes. All in all a very inclusive celebrations involving people of all the denominations!!
കൊട്ടിയൂരമ്പലം
വടക്കേ മലബാറിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് കൊട്ടിയൂരമ്പലം . കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലയിലെ കൊട്ടിയൂർ എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം മഴയും പുഴയും കാടും ഇഷ്ടദൈവവും ഒത്തു ചേരുന്ന ഒരിടമാണ് . ബാവലിപ്പുഴയുടെ ഇരു കരകളിലുമായി തെക്ക് ഇക്കരക്കൊട്ടിയൂർ , വടക്ക് അക്കരെ കൊട്ടിയൂർ ശൈവ സാന്നിധ്യങ്ങൾ ആണ്. സ്ഥിരം ക്ഷേത്രം ഇക്കരെ കൊട്ടിയൂരാണുള്ളത്. ഉത്സവ സമയത്ത് മാത്രമാണ് അക്കരെ കൊട്ടിയൂരിലേക് പ്രവേശനം ഈ സമയത് ഇക്കരെ കൊട്ടിയൂരിൽ പൂജയുണ്ടാകില്ല.

മുളയും ഓലയും ഇലകളും ഉപയോഗിച്ചുള്ള പുരകൾ മാത്രമാണിവിടെ കാണാൻ കഴിയുക. മണിത്തറയും വെള്ളത്തിലും കരയിലുമായി കെട്ടിയുണ്ടാക്കിയ പർണ്ണശാലകളും കുടിലുകളും ചേർന്നതാണ് ക്ഷേത്ര സമുച്ചയം. ബാവലിയിലെ കല്ലുകളും മണ്ണും കൊണ്ടാണ് മണിത്തറ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്. ദേവി സാന്നിദ്ധ്യമുള്ള അമ്മാറക്കല്ലുമുണ്ട്.

കേരളത്തിൽ ശബരിമല കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ഉൽസവകാലത്ത് കൂടുതൽ ആളുകൾ സന്ദർശിക്കുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് അക്കരെ കൊട്ടിയൂർ.

ദക്ഷയാഗം നടന്ന സ്ഥലമാണ് കൊട്ടീയൂർ എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. പരമശിവനെ സതി വിവാഹം ചെയ്തതിൽ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടാത്ത സതിയുടെ പിതാവ്, ദക്ഷൻ പതിനാലുലോകത്തെ ശിവനൊഴികെ എല്ലാവരേയും ക്ഷണിച്ചു യാഗം നടത്തി, ക്ഷണിച്ചില്ലെങ്കിലും സതി യാഗം കാണാൻ പോയി. അവിടെവച്ച് പരമശിവനെ ദക്ഷൻ അവഹേളിച്ചതിൽ ദുഃഖിതയായ സതീദേവി യാഗാഗ്നിയിൽ ചാടി ജീവനൊടുക്കി. കൈലാസത്തിലിരുന്ന പരമശിവൻ ഇതറിഞ്ഞ് കോപാകുലനായി ജഡ പറിച്ചെടുത്ത് നിലത്തടിച്ചു. അതിൽ നിന്നും വീരഭദ്രൻ ജനിച്ചു. വിരഭദ്രൻ യാഗശാലയിൽ ചെന്ന് ദക്ഷന്റെ താടി പറിച്ചെടുത്ത് ശിരസറുത്തു.
ശിവതാണ്ഡവ നൃത്തമാടി.
ദേവന്മാരും ഋഷിമാരും ബ്രഹ്മവിഷ്ണുമാരും ശിവനെ സമീപിച്ച് ശാന്തനാക്കി. ധക്ഷന്റെ തല അതിനിടയിൽ ചിതറി പോയതിനാൽ ആടിന്റെ തല ചേർത്ത് ശിവൻ ദക്ഷനെ പുനർജീവിപ്പിച്ചു. യാഗവും പൂർത്തിയാക്കി. പിന്നീട് ആ പ്രദേശം വനമായിമാറി എന്നതാണ് ഇവിടുത്തെ ഐതിഹ്യം..
