Waterfall Creek Canyon is probably more creek walking than true canyon, but, it is still a stunning adventure, very green, short and a couple of fun abseils you can do.

We made our entry as easy as possible, we followed the Cathedral Creek walking track down to that creek, crossed over and followed the walking track as far as it goes, then, continued to skirt around the private property on your right, staying as best we could in the national park.

Eventually we came to a steep feeder creek, we started zig-zagging down that creek until we hit a point we decided to abseil down a gully/slot, following the creek down further we came to a much bigger drop which made for a fun abseil.

A final slippery descent down the feeder creek into Waterfall Creek itself, where our adventure continued.

This one has so much stunning, green creek walking and the odd scramble. We came to a very narrow slot where the water flowed down into a dark pool, we decided to bypass easily on the far right of this. This would make for a challenging, tight abseil, and possibly a bit of fun getting out of the pool below.

Further downstream you come to the only must-do abseil, and it is a fun one, the water was pumping, it was dark and loud and so much fun, oh, and the pool was cold!

Not much further down from this abseil, we came to where Cathedral Creek flows in on true left and not much longer later, we arrived at the top of Happy Valley Waterfall and the walking track on true left.

Again, because there are good cut steps and a track, we elected not to abseil this one, this is one of the prettiest parts of this adventure. Now, you can exit right here and now, take the Happy Valley track back to your car, we did not, we continued downstream, exploring further.

We continued downstream through some gorgeous sections of wide canyon and creek, arrived at the gully we had chosen to exit up to Mount Irvine Road. We started up and just wow, like fighting a jungle, we gave up as there was no benefit from fighting the entire way up to the road. We turned around and 10 minutes later, were back at Happy Valley, and we took the much more civilised walking track back to our car.

Is this truly a canyon, possibly not, but it is a really easy, fun little adventure that should only take around half a day, easy to get into, easy to get out of. A 40mtr rope is more than enough. Watch out for the lawyer vine on the approach in though, it was everywhere!
