Welcome back to the garden! Today, we’re diving into one of the most essential tasks for any tomato grower: pruning. Whether you’re working with towering indeterminate varieties or the more compact determinate types, proper pruning is key to maintaining plant health, improving airflow, and ensuring a bountiful harvest.

In this video, I’ll take you through my pruning process, focusing on both indeterminate and determinate tomatoes. As these plants grow taller than expected, I’ll show you how I manage when my cages just aren’t big enough. You’ll see how I trim the lower leaves to boost airflow, which helps prevent diseases like blight and ensures that sunlight can reach all parts of the plant.

We’ll also discuss the importance of maintaining good airflow around your tomato plants. Proper airflow reduces humidity and keeps the leaves dry, which is crucial for preventing fungal issues. I’ll demonstrate how I prune the plants that have outgrown their cages and share some tips on dealing with overly tall plants.

Don’t forget that all those trimmings are perfect for your compost bin! I’ll remind you to feed your compost with the healthy green material you’ve pruned off. And as we prune, we’ll also be on the lookout for ripe tomatoes, harvesting what we can and leaving the rest to ripen.

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, this video will give you the tools you need to manage your tomato plants effectively. So grab your shears, and let’s get to work on keeping those tomato plants healthy and productive!
