For some reason, Minn Kota designed their anchor winch to require an anchor that weighs at least 20 pounds. That's WAY too much for many smaller boats. Now, you may be thinking, why would you need an anchor winch for smaller, and lighter anchors? It's because of the risk and danger of anchor line laying in the boat as you retrieve the anchor. It can get wrapped about your feet and legs, slip and drop the anchor and there you go! Also, you may have physical limitations, like me with two torn rotator cuffs, and can't retrieve any amount of anchor weight. It's just safer to push a button in any case.
This description of how to modify an anchor winch presumes you have enough intelligence to remove the cover, disconnect a couple wires in order to set the cover aside and follow simple instructions.
Cheers!
