In the Institut Josep Brugulat de Banyoles we have always defended education through music in a comprehensive and integral way. We, the theatre/arts department at Brugulat High School in Banyoles decided to take a more integral approach to teaching music. Body percussion is an excellent way of working through emotions to make music. Learning a choreographed routine and seeing the results of a team effort not only boosts self esteem but encourages group cooperation and gives each and every participant a vital role.

All in all this is a project that combines concentration, memorization, mental agility and the consciousness of our own bodies in space and time. Working through our emotions we come to generate a work of heightened awareness – all through the medium of music.

We use a method created by the percussionist Santi Serratosa called SSM (Signing, Sequencing, Music) which consists of teaching rhythmic patterns in a practical way in real time, structuring those rhythms into sequences and finally, the most important objective: making music.

On Wednesday 13th of December we took ourselves to a very special place by the lake of Banyoles. We braved near freezing temperatures to participate in this exciting and inspiring project and recorded this video which we would love to share with you.

This video is a challenge to all primary schools (Key Stages 3) and High Schools to take part, and join in. It includes tutorials from Santi Serratosa and Mariona Castells.

Take up the challenge and participate in this fantastic project! If you do accept the challenge, get in touch – we would love to see your work and use it to promote our project. We have a folder of material available where we can attach mp3, body percussion scores and methodology for indirectly working on students' self esteem in tutorial sessions.
