About Suwa Shrine: During the Tenkei Rebellion, a certain Ogami Korekiyo was appointed lord of Osuga Manor in Shimousa Province for his achievements in defeating Fujiwara no Sumitomo in Iyo Province, and was enshrined at Suwa Taisha Shrine in Shinano Province as a deity to protect the domain. After more than 20 generations, he led the farmers of the domain during the Tensho era and revered them as the guardian deity when they developed Sawara.
The shrine building was built in 1853.

▼About the Sawara Grand Festival The Sawara Grand Festival, a summer festival and autumn festival (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage / Nationally Designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property), is known as one of the three major float festivals in the Kanto region and has a tradition dating back approximately 300 years.
With the sounds of the Sawara-bayashi, one of Japan's three great musical accompaniments, ringing out throughout the town, the parade passes by the eaves of houses as it passes through the streets of Ko-Edo (a nationally designated traditional buildings preservation district), creating a very tasteful scene reminiscent of the Edo period.
The festival float, the highlight of the festival, is made entirely of keyaki wood and decorated with heavy carvings in the Kanto style, with a large doll up to 4m in height displayed on the top, created by a master puppeteer from the Edo and Meiji periods.
During the Yasaka Shrine Gion Festival, a summer festival held in July, 10 floats are pulled around the area on the east side of the Ono River (Honjuku district).
Meanwhile, at the Suwa Shrine Autumn Festival held in October, 14 floats are pulled around the area west of the Onogawa River (Shinjuku area).
At the Suigo Sawara Float Hall, two floats, one for the summer festival and one for the autumn festival, are displayed in rotation.
