Good day!
I am no expert in survival but had a great idea I began showing and testing my son. Which way is North.
In the northern hemisphere the sun is south of us. This the shadows point North. Depending on morning or evening shadows will point East or west but always north. Reverse for the southern hemisphere.

This is what has worked for me. If you have a method that works better for you.. it might work well for others! Feel free to share in the comments your experience, questions, alternatives and constructive criticisms. :)
