How to Catch, Clean, and Cook Redtail Surfperch!

In this video, you will learn how to catch and clean and cook a redtail surfperch. We used sand crabs, but other popular baits include the LuckyCraft Minnow and gulp sandworms. These can be purchased at most mainstream tackle shops. I used size 2 mustad bait siwash sickle hooks. I like these hooks because it seems to stay in the fish’s booth better. The rod I used was a Ugly Stik Tiger 7 foot and the reel I used is a Quantum Iron Baitcasting reel. These fish can be relatively difficult to fillet but if you take your time, results will be great. This fish is usually mushy, but after coating it with salt it firms up and is very easy to cook with. Panko Japanese breadcrumbs are the best way, in my opinion are the best way to prepare these fish. The sauce was soy, oyster sauce, chili sweet sauce, teriyaki, garlic, and ginger. Simmer for 5 mins on high heat. Then pour over cooked fish. Overall, the fish was great. Now try it yourself!!!

One of these days I will probably end up going to the jetty, the north jetty or. South jetty and try to catch some rockfish, lingcod, or kelp greenling.
