In January 2023 I interviewed Director, Jim Yukich for my #getphilvotedin Campaign. An effort I started nearly two years ago to encourage the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to nominate, and ultimately induct, Phil Collins for his significant contribution to music as a Solo Artist.

We discussed Jim’s career with Genesis and Phil Collins that began in 1983 and led him to direct more than 50 music videos, TV specials and live concert films. As we were discussing the making, and behind the scenes stories of many of the music videos, something a little magical happened. When we were discussing the video for the song “Invisible Touch,“. Jim told me a story about how he made a special version of this video. His “Directors cut,” was at the request of Genesis band member, Mike Rutherford. Mike was asked by MTV to be one of their guest DJs for an hour segment where he would host the show and do introductions of various videos that he selected to play.

One of the ideas Mike had was that he and Jim would do a mock competition for which of them could make their own best version of the “Invisible Touch,” music video that was shot, not only by the professional film crew, but also by the three main band members who held Super 8 video cameras during this shoot.

Jim said that the video that he made used his extra footage that had never been seen before, and that it only aired one time (in 1986) during the MTV segment Mike hosted, and that Jim appeared on as a special guest. I told Jim that I’d be calling him one day to see if he could find those tapes.

Well, I did, and he did. And what resulted almost a year later is the premiere of an entirely new version of “Invisible Touch” that no one has seen -since 1986 anyway.

It took Jim’s trust and faith in me, me finding someone who had the old equipment to be able to do a transfer of the tapes that are now really obsolete in terms of their technology, and my willingness to spend a good chunk of money to do it. And in all cases it was successful.

I am thrilled to be able to be a part of bringing this amazing video and lost footage back for Genesis and Phil fans to enjoy!

I hope you do enjoy it. Not only do we get to see this great video, we also get to see Mike’s humorous segments. I am confident that I will be able to get a copy of this over to Mike for him to check it out and relive all those memories.

Let me know what you think of the video and the whole special I produced in the comments.
