OBSESSION WITH. GREATNESS | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (September 22, 2024)

Today is the Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time; and the gospel presents Jesus sharing with his disciples how he would be handed over to authorities and sentenced to death, which at the time his disciples failed to understand.

In Capernaum, Jesus inquires: “What were you arguing about on the way?” And while the disciples won’t speak about it, Jesus has sensed their topic, and so he tells them: “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”

To Jesus, greatness is attained when one is able to deny oneself in order to serve others.

By calling a child forward, he declares that one should be ready, and open, to receive the littles ones, the vulnerable, the marginalized.

Can we do that? Let us guard against the obsession for worldly greatness.
