This is a ride from Newport City in South Wales along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal trail, splitting off at Pontymoile and heading along the disused Monmouthshire Eastern Valley Railway, now a hiking and cycle trail all the way to Big Pit National Coal Museum.

I had this route planned for a day I felt that would justify trying it and it doesn't get better than when the autumn leaves are lining the ground and at their most golden.

The first canal section is about the first quarter of the cycle ride I previously did to Abergavenny and it reminded me of how beautiful that canal ride was. The rest of the trail along the old railway is mostly pleasant with a few things to see such as remains of old railway stations, buildings, bridges and a viaduct. I wish I had been able to see the viaduct from the land underneath but time didn't allow.

The day I rode this route was still a bit damp from rain the night before and the sky was a bit grey. While it was still ok I think this would be best enjoyed on a nice sunny day or a crisp bright autumn day to get the best out of it.

I didn't get to take a tour of the Big Pit underground mine this particular day as the day was running out and I still had to cycle back to catch the train. Besides which electrical items, including cameras are not allowed on the tour of the mines due to safety issues, but I've heard it's an amazing experience from a few people.

Hope you enjoy this autumn trail ride.
