The Indonesian army will not allow Timor to trigger the disintegration of their hard-won Javanese Empire. Lt. General Susilo Yudhoyono, the army’s Chief of Staff is unequivocal: “The most threatening factor is the possibility of social disintegration, we have to prevent it.” The military will not relinquish power to Habibie, “We still have yet to believe that the politicians can lead and develop the country as required,” says General Argus Widjaya, head of Aceh operations. Troops jump in time to a disco beat – a piece of regimented frivolity aimed at showing the army’s commitment to change. But change does not include the break-up of Indonesia. From Timor to Aceh the army’s message is clear: separatism brings death and the international community won’t be there quickly enough to save you.
