PSSM2: Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy is a disorder that will cause muscle cramping from abnormal glycogen (sugar) storage in the muscles. Sore muscles, muscle weakness & cramping are all signs of PSSM2. Muscle Biopsy is the only known way to confirm the disorder. What I have found, through experiencing a number of horses with this disorder, is they have all had some form of untreated trauma. Usually at a very young age. Setting up disregulation/tensly calibrated central nervous system. I am not a Vet, but do work closely with our Vet to help manage Tilly's troubles. Tilly is learning to trust not only humans, but herself. This process we travel together, is in effort to assist her to find self regulation. Bringing my energy to a calm place (during these episodes can be challenging, because it hurts my heart, to see her hurting), but it's vital I remain calm, inviting her to find that calm within herself. Periodically I will touch Tilly to remind her, "come back to your body" it can be very challenging to trust your body when it goes into involuntary spasms, what seems to be out of the blue. But really, over the period of a year that she has been with us, she has had to say goodbye to 3 of her close friends, due to health complications. During these trying times, of emotional upset, I have seen her triggered into episodes. No change in diet, but big change in family/herd, environment. I have now, an awareness of the symptoms leading up to her episodes. On occasion I have come to her aid, which has shut down the full blown "tie up"...I have no doubt, that if Tilly is given an apple or something high in sugar, it can (I compare this to a human hypoglycemic panic/anxiety attack), to a susceptible place, leading to tie up episode. This video is to share, what Tilly & I have discovered together, through the process of showing up for her, helping her see that I am listening (she is not alone) encouraging her to return to her body, so she can find her way back to self regulation. Brain connect to feet, brain connect to muscle spasms, brain to breath, movement to shift the cramp back to blood flow, release of tension & toxins, Back to rest digest state, recalibration/reset of nervous system. It's important to get guidance from a vet if you think your horse is experiencing PSSM1 or 2 symptoms. Get guidance to help your horse to feel better in their body. It is manageable with great attention. PSSM1 can be found in blood testing. PSSM2 does not have genetic markers. Thanks for watching & much love to those that have a horse challenged by this disorder.
