A common complaint with Battlestar Galactica's final season is that the writers didn't seem to have a plan. This is an interesting criticism because it implies that had Ronald D Moore et al had a plan, the show would have automatically been better. An apt comparison would be to Babylon 5 which supposedly went into production with a detailed five season long plan. But I think it's worth looking at the creative processes behind both of these shows to see if having a plan in advance really helped Babylon 5 as much as the apparent absence of a plan apparently hurt Battlestar Galactica.
