Dundee United took the spoils in the first Dundee derby of the SPL season as they beat their city rivals 3-0 in a fiery encounter at Tannadice. Johnny Russell scored twice but was later sent off along with Dundee's Stephen O'Donnell following a second half clash. Gavin Gunning had opened the scoring for United after he capitalised on poor defending.
