To mark their centenary in 1973 the Scottish Rugby Union hosted an international 7s tournament at Murrayfield. New Zealand, Australia, France, Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales all sent teams with a President's Vll featuring players from countries not participating completing the tournament line up. Involving a format of two groups of four, with the winners proceeding to the final, England and Wales were drawn in the same group and with both teams easily seeing off France and the President's Vll they met to decide the group winners and who would qualify for the first ever world 7s final. With a team which included the likes of Gareth Edwards, JJ Williams, Gerald Davies, Phil Bennett, JPR Williams and John Taylor Wales were strongly fancied to win but succumbed to a shock 24 - 10 defeat to a Andy Ripley inspired England. Presented here are brief highlights of the encounter together with interviews with Gareth Edwards, Fran Cotton and the late and much missed Andy Ripley.
