Nyi Ageng Serang is a national hero who etched her name in the history of resistance to Dutch colonialism. She was a female warrior who led troops in the Java War or also known as the Diponegoro War 1825-1830. At the age of 73, Nyi Ageng Serang still took to the battlefield using a palanquin to help Prince Diponegoro lead troops against the Dutch. Nyi Ageng Serang is the grandmother of Ki Hajar Dewantara, a National Hero. Nyi Ageng Serang was born with the real name Raden Ajeng (RA) Kustiyah.
Born on October 1, 1752 in Serang village, a remote village located 14 km north of Solo. The location of the village is on the border between Sragen district and Boyolali district. The area used to be fief land, namely land that was free from taxes and corvee.
