looks best at 480p (HQ). (Note this scene cannot be filmed today following a mesh fence now in place to the right of the station). With Southall shed back lit, the poor air quality the government had been warning us about is all too apparent, even for a steam shed. 70000 Britannia is seen shunting around the depot, then fetching the empty stock. The loco slipping and struggling to get the heavy load (including the diesel at the rear) up the incline into the platform road (from about 03:00). Here the stock is steam hauled part of the way into the (unsused) platform, where the class 37 at the rear then pushes the whole train along, with steam loco on front (from about 08:30), so as to position the diesel at the right spot for the signal that will release the train onto the main line. the Class 37 is seen (and heard) pulling the whole ensemble out onto the former GWR lines towards Paddington (from about 10:56 onwards).
We then move to Southall station, and the platform end (from about 12:35 onwards), as we wait for the Cathedrals Express to pass on the slow lines, it is preceded on the fast lines by the obligatory HST. As the steam train comes into view, cue a car alarm to start (only lasted 5 seconds), as the steam tour gets more and more closer, cue the enthusiast on the other platform to start shouting a conversation at me (why do so at that moment?).
However it still does not detract from the (still unamed) Britannia passing with whistles for the staff at Southall Shed (on the right, Former goods shed on the left). Steam from the safety valves blowing as she goes on her way to Stratford Upon Avon.
Every now and then throughout the video a service train will pass by to or from Paddington.
