It's never easy seeing a partner be at their wits' end and slowly shift away from their principles... But it makes for such a good story! Being emotionally attached to a character and then experiencing first-hand their slip into madness, the steady change for the worse, creates a truly unforgettable character. And that's why you can't forget Dutch. But how would you go about writing and designing such changes without them feeling unnatural? I think Red Dead Redemption has a few techniques to teach us, such as the subtle and clever art of foreshadowing.
