“Chief Big Elk’, also known as: “Ongpatonga”, was born in 1770 and crossed-over to the Spirit World, in 1846. He was a Principal Chief of the Omaha tribe for many years, on the upper Missouri River. He is most well-known, to many for the oration that he delivered at the funeral of Teton-Sioux Chief Black Buffalo, in 1813. Chief Big Elk led his People, during a time of increasing changes, with threats from Sioux warfare, disease and European-American encroachment.
