How awesome is the new SL3? It depends what you're currently shooting with now. If you're already shooting an SL, SL2, or an SL2-S, the upgrades are significant enough to upgrade. Besides getting the latest sensor, processor, and firmware, the upgrades on the new SL3 is worthy of an upgrade. An articulating screen, CFE-B card slot, second main top dial, and the new battery is vey enticing for current SL users. I also think this is a great option for current Panasonic L Mount shooters who were waiting for phase detect autofocus. Does the new SL3 'compete' from a tech-performance perspective against the latest and greatest from Sony, Canon, or Nikon? No, but that's not why you should get into the L Mount system. The SL has always been class-leading in build quality (made in Germany), well balanced industrial design, top notch lenses, and balanced with Leica's heritage. You buy a Leica because it's a Leica. Pretty simple.

In addtion, if you're like me and had some Leica gear, but always wanted to expand into their SL system, right now is a great time. The new SL3 is selling for the same price as the SL2 at $6995 USD. This means used SL2 cameras will be flooding the market as people start to upgrade. I've decided to partner with Camera West and switch to the SL2 as my primary hybrid camera system. Follow along with me as I play around and see what I can pull off with this beast of a camera. I've reviewed this camera many times, but now I'm going to have to learn to depend on it. Stay tuned for a full report on the new SL3 as well as the previous SL2.
