The 2024 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad and branded as Paris 2024, is set to take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024, in France. Paris is the primary host city, with events spread across 16 other cities in Metropolitan France and one subsite in Tahiti, part of French Polynesia.

Bidding Process Paris was awarded the Games at the 131st IOC Session in Lima, Peru, on September 13, 2017. The bidding process initially involved six candidate cities: Paris, Hamburg, Boston, Budapest, Rome, and Los Angeles. However, withdrawals by several cities left only Paris and Los Angeles in contention. Eventually, a decision was made to award both the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics simultaneously to these two cities.

Host City Election Paris was elected as the host city for the 2024 Olympics on September 13, 2017. The election took place during the 131st IOC Session in Lima, Peru.

Development and Preparations Venues for the Olympics will be spread across various locations in France. Most events will be held in Paris and its metropolitan region. Other cities like Lille, Marseille, and Teahupo’o village in French Polynesia will also host specific events.

Medals The Olympic and Paralympic medals for Paris 2024 were unveiled by Tony Estanguet in February 2024. These medals feature embedded hexagon-shaped tokens of scrap iron from the Eiffel Tower’s original construction. Approximately 5,084 medals will be produced by Monnaie de Paris.

Security France has taken significant security measures for the Games. Agreements with Europol and the UK Home Office aim to strengthen security cooperation. Security forces are deploying drones, sea barriers to prevent illegal crossings, and surface-to-air missile units for air security.

Volunteers The volunteer platform for Paris 2024 opened in March 2023 with plans to recruit 45,000 volunteers worldwide. Over 300,000 applications were received by May 3, 2023. Security concerns led to exclusions based on safety fears.

Torch Relay The Olympic torch relay began on April 16 with the lighting of the flame in Olympia, Greece. The relay involves various torchbearers leading up to the start of the Games.
