'Weed Day' also known as 420, is celebrated annually on April 20th, with events held worldwide. It's a day when marijuana enthusiasts come together to mark the occasion, often advocating for legalisation.
The term '420' originated from a group of students in California who met at 4:20 pm in 1971 for a smoke session every day. Despite its popularity, the exact origins remain debated. The group, known as The Waldos, began using the time 4:20 to refer to smoking, giving rise to the term '420'. Since Americans often write April 20th as 4/20, it became the designated day for indulging in cannabis. Also, another theory suggests that it was a police code for catching smokers, though the actual code pertains to murder.
In the UK, where cannabis is illegal, celebrations like the Hyde Park gathering serve as both a celebration and a protest against stringent drug laws.
