Well, this video I never wanted to make. But I guess hindsight is 20/20. My LaCie Rugged 4TB hard drive failed on me. It was recommended by photographer friends as being the best. It was a plug-and-play 2.5" drive that was powered just by the computer's USB 3.0 power port (no A/C wall outlet power required). All of a sudden this hard drive just stopped being recognized by my computers (both Mac and Windows). It was about six months old, rarely used, and never dropped. Apparently LaCie (French company) was bought recently by Seagate.

I researched as much as I could, and thought maybe it was the USB port that was bad. So I followed some tutorial videos to dismantle the hard drive shell. I then inserted a Star Link eSATA to USB cable directly onto the exposed hard drive. It still was not being recognized (a.k.a. mounted) by any device.
Because the data is so valuable to me (25+ unedited video projects and thousands of photos) - I decided to send it off to a repair shop in NYC to hopefully repair it. It could be the head that reads the spinning 7200 RPM drive got stuck, firmware issues, or a multitude of other issues. My fingers are crossed that the data can be recovered.

This was a lesson learned that ALL HARD DRIVES WILL FAIL OVER TIME. I am going all-in on a new data backup process. More videos to come about the new hardware and workflow process to prevent this from ever occurring again - as this is a sickening feeling.
