This medieval town on the Yantra River is a charming getaway amidst the green hills of the Bulgarian countryside.

For long stretches of its history Veliko-Tarnovo was the most important city in Bulgaria, its hilltop fortress standing guard against intrusions by the Ottomans and others. Today it's cobbled streets, scenic vistas and lively markets offer the perfect blend for travelers who prefer their charm slightly off the beaten path.
