A playthrough of Nintendo's 1995 fighting game for the Super Nintendo, Killer Instinct.

Played with Jago on the five-star difficulty level.

This was one of the coolest games on the SNES back when it came out. It didn't look like the arcade game, nor did it look or sound anywhere near as good as Donkey Kong Country. But, for how fast it moved and closely it mimicked the game play of the original (and on the then 5-year old 16-bit SNES), this was a pretty damn admirable effort. I still do crack up when I see the close-up portrait of Orchid (her chest became pretty pointy) and when I hear the beyond distorted sample that announces "PERFECT" at the end of the match.

Most of the moves and combos were ported over, and though the sound and the graphics got heavily downgraded in the process, the game was just as fun as the coin-op version ever was. Like Donkey Kong Country, this was another shining example of the magic that Rare regularly produced for Nintendo.

I must admit, Killer Instinct is not my strongest fighting game. I have played this a lot over the years, but I've never been able to play it quite as intuitively as the Street Fighter games. I do manage some ultra combos, but if you're wanting to see a nonstop parade of record-breaking combo counters, you'd be better off looking at one of those cracked-out TAS videos. I have no hope of ever getting as good as the best players are at it, but still - I think I'm pretty good. I did beat it without losing a round :)
