This is a recording of our November 2023 One Community Sangha Gathering and Dharma Talk. This month, teacher and translator Justin Kirkwood discusses the Three Noble Principles. Enlightenment sure seems like a lofty goal sometimes, doesn’t it? Amidst life’s many tasks, we’re also trying to reach enlightenment?! It’s hard to know where to begin. Simply meditating isn’t the answer. Applying the Three Noble Principles or the Three Excellences to our practice provides us with a tangible starting place.

The Three Noble Principles are:

1. Generating bodhicitta
2. Non-referential state of the main body of practice
3. Dedicating virtue to enlightenment

The Great Omniscient One, Longchenpa,* stated, “Particularly, it is important for traversing the path of liberation for the powerful virtues of the Mahayana to be embraced by the three aspects: the preparation of generating bodhicitta, the non-referential state of the main body of practice, and the dedication in the end.”

*Longchen Rabjam Drimé Özer was a Tibetan Buddhist adept in the Nyingma tradition. He is famous for clarifying the Dzogchen methods within Vajrayana Buddhism in his Seven Precious Treasuries, three texts on resting and their auto-commentaries, and more. About our One Community Sangha Gatherings:
For one evening each month, we come together as a community to deepen our understanding of the dharma and connect with our fellow sangha members. Each gathering is facilitated by a different Namchak teacher, thought leader, or staff member and will revolve around our month's theme. These gatherings are two hours in total. The first half consists of a dharma talk, and the second half offers an opportunity for participants to reflect on the teachings through small group discussions in short break-out sessions. These group discussions are followed by a Q&A session with the teacher. Participation in small group discussions is encouraged but not required. You can always sit these out! We encourage Learning Circles and meditation buddies to attend together. Inviting friends, partners, family members, neighbors, and co-workers is always welcome.
