Charity wants Bernadette, her daughter, to have the opportunities that life in the village did not afford her many years before. In a bid to make the dreams she has for her come true, Charity has willingly made a lot of sacrifices to open doors for the teenage girl. Bernadette appreciates all her mother´s efforts, but has other plans - plans that she has done her best to keep a secret from almost everyone.
An unexpected opportunity presents itself and with all her belongings in one bag, the young girl bids the village goodbye. In a strange and new environment, away from her mother´s ever watchful eyes, she finally has the chance to make her own decisions and live her life exactly how she wants to. But Bernadette soon finds herself navigating uncharted territories and asking herself: which is really the better plan? Are all dreams worth fighting for?
Based on the novel by Patricia Asedegbega, "The girl from the village."
