In 1979 the Sami people were officially recognized as the indigenous people of Sweden, after hundreds of years of fighting for their rights. But the conflict between the Swedes and the Sami isn't over.

In this video I discuss the historic origins of the Sami people, how they started to become a unified culture thousands of years ago, and how they have interacted with the people of Sweden. The Sami are the indigenous people of northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and parts of Russia, and these days the majority of them live in Norway. But there's still a significant portion of them in Sweden.

The Sami were originally a nomadic people, but the became semi-nomadic over time. One reason for that is that they started tending reindeer. The reindeer is an integral part of their culture, and reindeer herding is still carried out to modern times.

If you've ever seen the Disney movie Frozen, Kristoff and Sven are heavily inspired by the Sami people. And there are many other interesting facts about them - not least, how they live, and how they express their handicraft skills. But in this video I focus on one thing in particular: the conflict that's happening to this very day, between modern Swedes and the Sami.

In 2023 the Sami complained that there are too many hikers in the very popular Jämtland triangle area, and the Swedish Tourism Board decided that several hiking cabins will be closed down. This made some people very happy...and some people very upset. And this conflict between how the land in northern Sweden is exploited or protected is one that's likely to escalate more and more over time.
