Yusuf Bilyarta Mangunwijaya or popularly known as Romo Mangun is one of Indonesia's multi-talented national figures; clergy, teachers, novelists, writers, architects and cultural figures. After his death, his predicate became longer; as a national teacher, light of education, a contemporary prophet, a fighter for humanity, and so on.

The figure of Father Mangun is very legendary in Indonesia and even abroad. Two honorary stars have been awarded to him; “Bintang Mahaputera Nararya” from President Gus Dur in 2000, and “Bintang Budaya Parama Dharma” from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2010.
Even though his background is as a Catholic clergyman, his struggle is very universal, breaking through group, ethnic and religious barriers.

For him, Indonesia is not just one or two groups. Indonesia is us. It is not surprising that people finally see Father Mangun as a figure who creates "harmony in diversity", as implied by the daily costume he often wears: a sarong and black skullcap.
His integrity and work in efforts to advance local culture are worthy of praise, both in the world of literature and the field of architecture.
One of Romo Mangun's monumental works in the field of architecture is the Kali Code Village in Yogyakarta which was built in the 1980s with the community, students and volunteers working together.

A settlement intended for homeless people, prostitutes and street children, which was later awarded several prestigious international awards, including; “The Aga Khan Award for Architercture” (1992), “The Ruth and Ralph Erskine Fellowship Award” (1995) from the Swedish Government for architecture for the sake of the people who are not noticed, and “The Professor Teeuw Foundation Award”, Leiden-Jakarta (1996) .
