Often only noted as being sandwiched in between Grover Cleveland's two terms, Benjamin Harrison is not often one of our more memorable presidents. Born in North Bend, Ohio in 1833, Harrison was the grandson of William Henry Harrison who became the 9th president in 1841. Harrison grew up in Ohio but decided to move to Indianapolis, Indiana in the 1850s. After serving in the Civil War, Harrison became involved in state politics which eventually gained him the Republican nomination for president in 1888. Upon defeating Cleveland and taking office Harrison passed multiple legislative bills that sought to strengthen the American economy after a financial panic the previous year. However, his policies were often seen by ordinary Americans as catering to big business and wealthy donor interests which led to defeat in a rematch to Harrison in 1892. Harrison would spend the remainder of his years at home in Indianapolis before passing away in 1901.
