While herping with Dr Gowri Shankar in Kalingamane we found that Green vipers, like many other snakes, do not specifically target or poke eyes. However, they are venomous and can deliver a painful bite if they feel threatened or provoked. Green vipers typically strike at whatever part of the body is closest to them when they feel the need to defend themselves, which could include the face or eyes if a person is very close.

It's important to note that snakes generally try to avoid confrontation with humans and will only bite as a last resort. The idea of a snake "poking eyes" might come from myths or exaggerated stories, but in reality, snakes, including green vipers, don't deliberately aim for eyes.

If you're ever in a situation where you're close to a venomous snake, the best course of action is to slowly and carefully back away to avoid any chance of a bite.
