ARA Boston Instructor Julie Beck shares how she typically tones a canvas. Here, she uses burnt umber which is fast drying. You can use any color, out of the tube or mixed, to tone your canvas. However, burnt umber is fast drying and a commonly used pigment to tone canvases.

Make sure after you tone your canvas, you give it adequate time to dry before painting on it!
