The double overhand knot is typically tied in the end of the rope to close the system during rappelling and belaying. It prevents a climber from rappelling off of the end of the rope, and prevents the rope from slipping through the belay device while belaying. Stopper knots should always be tied in the end of the rope while belaying and rappelling.
