Here are some pointers on how to maintain good eye contact during conversations:
The 70/30 Rule: Aim for making eye contact 70% of the time while listening and 50% of the time while speaking. This creates a balance between engagement and allowing yourself to formulate thoughts.
Short Breaks: Look away naturally for brief moments. Glance to the side, perhaps to acknowledge something in the environment, before returning your gaze. Avoid looking down or darting your eyes around.
Focus on the Bridge: If intense eye contact feels uncomfortable, focus on the bridge of the person's nose. This creates the impression of looking directly at them while offering a slight reprieve.
Listen with Your Eyes: When the other person is talking, use your eye contact to show attentiveness. Look engaged and interested in what they have to say.
Find Your Comfort Zone: Start with shorter conversations and gradually build your confidence. The more you practice, the more natural eye contact will feel.
