Judy Hilyard graduated from the School of Nursing in 1966 with a degree in nursing and a license as a registered nurse. The following year, she joined the pioneering staff of a new ICU. Intensive care nursing was a completely new specialty within Medicine and Nursing. Judy remained in that specialty for 47 years, until she retired in 2014. She held positions such as bedside nurse, head nurse, director of Intensive Care (formerly known as ICU), critical care educator, and critical care clinical nurse specialist. . Throughout her career, she returned to school and earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in Nursing and a master's degree in Public Administration.
Towards the end of her career, Judy took 2 different programs from the Sacred Art of Living Center in Bend, OR. She wanted to learn more about how to work with the dying in intensive care in a way that she was not doing: helping to support the dying process rather than simply trying to prevent it.

In those programs, she heard about the ancient Celtic process of working with the dying, called Anam Cara.-Celtic words that mean soul friend or soul mate. During one such session, Judy learned of a practice used by some Anam Caras to assist the dying by escorting the person through the veil at the time of death. They were called Anam Aira-carrier of the soul. Judy has been practicing those traditions since 2014, working with people to help them be prepared to die, escorting those who are afraid of dying through the veil at their time of death, and connecting with loved ones who have died for them. They are still alive and want to know how their loved ones who have died are doing.
