Promoting Cultural Awareness in Health Care Professionals

The increasing diversity of the nation brings opportunities and challenges for health care providers to create and deliver optimal care to diverse groups of patients. The goal of cultural awareness in health care is to reduce health disparities and to improve health care outcomes for all patients regardless of their race, ethnic background, native languages spoken, and religious or cultural beliefs. Cultural awareness and sensitivity training are integral to improved patient outcomes, safety, and satisfaction.

This webinar aims to define and explain the role of culture in the way patients access care, how the patient’s culture may influence the way care is provided, and why the health care team may interpret the patient as being non-adherent or non-compliant.

PRESENTER:
Elaine Leinung DNP, RN, FNP-C, CNE

Dr. Elaine Leinung is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at New York City College of Technology. She is a Family Nurse Practitioner who currently practices in a primary care setting. Dr. Leinung’s clinical practice has been with underserved populations and minorities, both ethnic and LGBT populations. From experience as an educator and clinician, Dr. Leinung has developed an interest in how cultural awareness and sensitivity training can improve health care outcomes in minority patients. She is a nationally recognized speaker, and has written and produced educational television programs aimed at promoting health. She has published articles and taught workshops on communication skills to combat Bullying in Nursing. She is currently working on an interdisciplinary research project to promote cultural awareness in the health care professions.
