According to Google, a question that gets asked a lot is if you need to know music theory to produce music?

This answer might differ depending on who you ask and what kind of music you're making.

My honest opinion is that you don't need extensive knowledge in music theory to produce music; you need a basic understanding of it.

Now don't get me wrong, this doesn't mean you shouldn't seek to expand your knowledge in theory as it can help. It's better to have the ability and not need it than to need it and not know it.

Music theory can help you identify what's going on in a song, which will help you reproduce the vibe.

For example, I used to hear trance a lot in my day and listen to these spacey emotional chords that I didn't know how to recreate. If I knew what a modulation was, I would have picked up quickly that this chord was made using that and could instantly use it in my song.

Understanding the theory can help you create the music you want faster and lead you to experiment more, but if

Basic Theory You Need To Know

Scales

Scales are essential to understand in music production as this will allow you to make music that makes sense to most people's ears. Knowing scales doesn't guarantee you will make anything good, but at least it won't sound like Beethoven if he had gone deaf before he understood how to write music. Gladly DAWS has started implementing tools for you to utilize to let you know what keys belong to a scale, and you can jam from there. How Can Music Theory Help Here?
There are so many more scales you can experiment with, like Romanian Minors, Pentatonic Scales, ...etc, that will help give your track a different vibe; for instance, if I wanted to make an Egyptian song, I might choose a particular scale. Without knowing this knowledge, you would probably have to have a happy accident to acquire it.

Chords Building Them

Chords are a set of notes you can play together that sound very harmonic. Knowing how to develop a chord can help you, but it doesn't mean you need to understand extensive knowledge of them. An easy way to build out chords is to count by 2 to reach your first note and again to reach your 2nd note. This helps a ton in building out your basic chords, and from there, you can experiment.
How Can Music Theory Help?
Music theory can help in giving you access to many more chord variations. For instance, Suspended 2nds,4ths, extended variations, Open Voiced Chords, inversions. All this can help in getting a different vibe. Now, this is where I try to keep it basic. You might be seeking the extra sauce but be weary here.

Voice Leading

Voice Leading
It is a great essential tool to make Chord Progressions transition more fluidly than others. The technique is pretty simple to implement, and I always recommend my students learn it as it's a basic one to remember. Avicii was fantastic at doing this, and if you watch his tutorial with Computer Music Magazine, you will see that he used this a lot to make his chords. You can also use voice leading to create melodies that make sense and have an excellent relationship to the chord. For example, you can use notes that are part of the chord to create a theme that interacts well with the chord.

How Can Music Theory Help Here?
Well, voice leading is a great tool, but it also leads to predictable melodies and chords. Understanding music theory can help you break the pattern more, leading to beautiful unpredictable pieces.

Arpeggios

Arpeggios can sometimes be broken chords or a sequence of notes that repeat and play. Creating them is pretty simple and can lead to awesome melodies. This is crucial to know if you are entering the dance world as it appears in Dance music time and time again.
