The return of the fancy sticks.

This is a snare cam of my last time marching in with the Dow High Marching Band at Dow High's game vs. Midland High on October 22nd, 2022 (Dow 8, Midland 14). Video shot with a GoPro Hero+.

First off, I want to say a massive thank you to Jeremy Wisler for posting the original snare cam all the way back in 2013. That video is a big part of why I was so excited to be a part of the Dow High Drumline, and I firmly believe that without it, I wouldn't be the same drummer that I am today. One person sharing this activity with me, even indirectly, was all it took to start the chain of events that leads to me today, auditioning for an Open Class WGI group and looking to do drum corps this upcoming summer.

More thank you's go out to my instructors.

To Mr. Roger Stevens: Thank you for introducing us to drumline in middle school, and thank you for continuing to push us to be excellent every year. Thank you so much for all of the time you've been with our line.

To Mr. Chris Sabourin: Thank you for showing me how much joy and excitement can be found in this activity. Thank you for an incredible first experience with indoor percussion at MidMichigan Impact, and I wish you and your staff all the best as you continue to touch more young lives like my own.

To Mrs. Karen Dastick: Thank you for showing me that cymbals are an awesome instrument. I honestly used to think that they were kind of stupid, but the more I listened to you and the details that you push the section to strive for, the more I realized that the cymbal line is actually one of the most badass parts of the drumline.

To Mr. Ken Yagiela: Thank you for coming in for my senior year and proving how incredible of a teacher you are to not only me, but the entire DHS drumline. I love the way you handled teaching our line this year, and I wish you all the best as you continue to in the future.

And finally, to Mr. Steve DeRees: Thank you for making the Dow High Marching Band and all of the other music programs that you're involved in in any capacity so excellent while being so inclusive. Thank you for pointing out almost every mistake you find and for expecting us to be better after every rep. You're the best director I've ever had the pleasure of playing with.

My final thank you's go out to a few of the senior members of this line.

To Catelin Greiman: Thank you for putting your heart, body, and soul into this drumline. Thank you for sticking around, even when you wanted to quit at a few points over the course of your four years. Thank you for being an incredible and genuine friend.

To Frank Karl: Thank you for reciprocating the effort that I put into this line over the last 4 years. Thank you for making tenors freshman year and giving me some friendly competition and for being as passionate about this activity as me. Most of all, thank you for your nasty, stank face-inducing basslines in Jazz.

And finally, thank you to Peter Barbeau: Freshman year, I thought you would never get off of cymbals, let alone become my best friend. Thank you for the joy you've brought to my life and for showing me that it's okay to loosen up a little and enjoy the simple pleasures that high school has to offer every now and then.

I guess you could say this video is a love letter to the Dow High music programs and everyone that's made them so incredible for me over the course of my time at Dow High. Thank you to everyone.

I hope this video inspires the next generation of Dow High Drumline members like Jeremy's did for me. If you'd like to see a version of this video without the sheets, you can find it here:
