In 1956 Philip K. Dick wrote the short story "The Minority Report" that posed a poignant philosophical question: is the future set in stone? Can we change it? Fast forward to 2002 where Spielberg and company took the themes established by Dick and developed them into a critique of where the future is heading and how it will effect society and individuals. Aesthetically and thematically the critique centers around romanticism versus existentialism. As broad as these two arenas are, the angle that each is given in the film to support the story offers a deep cutting commentary on how society shapes us and what we’d have to do in order to overcome the negative influences that can push us into a dark, hopeless, existential hole as well as a possible answer to the question first posed by Dick 64 years ago.
