Well everyone it's time to celebrate the birth of a Eurasian beaver on Exmoor - remember this is for the first time in 400 years. Two adults were successfully reintroduced by the National Trust in January 2020. They were released on the estate to increase biodiversity and ease flooding. Their presence has been a success and since arriving they have transformed the woodland in their 2.7-hectare enclosure into a more open wetland which has created diverse habitats that benefit a range of wildlife, including kingfishers, sparrow hawks, herons, grey wagtails, and moorhens, and many invertebrates.

Footage shows the six-week-old swimming with its mother in the large enclosure on the Holnicote Estate in Somerset. The male had been seen dragging more wood and vegetation around their den in late spring and the female also changed her usual habits, and stayed out of sight, leaving the male to work alone which are both indicative of an upcoming birth.

Let’s hope they continue to thrive under our protection and awe.
