Mercedes-Benz W460
In April 1973, Mercedes-Benz created the first wooden mock-up of the future model, and a year later a metal prototype of the car was presented. On March 11, 1977, Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky personally laid the stones for the construction of a new pavilion of Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG enterprises in the city of Graz[7].

In February 1979, the first presentations of the first G-class SUV took place. Screenings of the 460 series took place from February 5 to 10 at the circuit in Le Castellet near Marseille[8]. A model range of four engines was offered for the choice of buyers. Two of them were petrol (230 G and 280 GE) and two were diesel (240 GD and 300 GD)[9]. All cars were equipped with a four-speed manual transmission and a plug-in front-wheel drive. The range of models included five body options: open, three—door and five-door station wagons, as well as a van in two versions - short-wheelbase (2400 mm) and long-wheelbase (2850 mm) [3]. The base of 2.85 m had a five-door station wagon. To meet the needs of military organizations, it was possible to order a long-wheelbase model not only with closed bodies, but both three-door and five-door variants with a tarpaulin awning. The palette of colors was limited to five: cream white (German Crèmeweiß), wheat yellow (German Weizengelb), Colorado beige (German Coloradobeige), carmine red (German Karminrot), as well as green (German Agavengrün)

In May 1982, the 230 GE model was launched instead of the 230 G[10]. The new M102 engine was equipped with a gasoline injection system, thanks to which the power unit developed a power of 125 horsepower. The power of the carburetor power unit M115 was 90 and 100 hp, depending on the modification. A year later, in March 1983, the 230 GE model was offered with an automatic 4-speed transmission. In July 1983, a manual 5-speed transmission became available for all models.

The Mercedes-Benz 280GE model participated in the Paris-Dakar rally. In 1982, 4 crews took off: Migault-Migault, Jaussaud-Brière, Gaillard-Gauvin, X-Brasseur[1]. A year later, 3 crews took part in the races: X-Brasseur, Migault-Gauvain, Jaussaud-Da Silva. In the same year, the Mercedes-Benz 280GE No. 142 car driven by Jacqui X and Claude Brasseur became the winner of the Paris-Dakar Rally. In 1984, only 1 crew went to the start: Jaussaud-Fontenay.

In 1985, the concern stopped producing a short-wheelbase van. At the same time, lockable differentials were included in the standard equipment of cars. A year later, a catalytic converter for exhaust gases became available as an option on the 230 GE and 280 GE models. At the same time, the 50-thousandth anniversary car was released. The outdated M115 engine was finally replaced with the M102[1].
Production of the 460 series was completed in August 1991 with the release of the 230 GE and 250 GD models[11]. At the same time, the presentation of the W461 series, a special military model that was produced until 2001, took place. This car was designed for special operating conditions and was purchased mainly by the military, special services and other government agencies. The model was (and still is) He has served in the armies of more than 20 countries around the world, such as Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, Egypt and so on. The US military purchased about a thousand 461 series cars, since the HMMWV did not fit into the CH-53 helicopter. The W461 was produced in long-wheelbase and short-wheelbase versions, as well as in a convertible body with a canvas top. The main target audience is legal entities; sales to individuals are limited — an "end—user certificate" (proof of the need for this vehicle) is required to purchase a car.
