At the heart of Unified Mindfulness is Shinzen's refinement of the traditional noting technique as taught by the Burmese meditation teacher Mahasi Sayadaw. Here Shinzen talks about his way of using noting during a group process at one of his on-site intensives.

00:00 - Historically noting is associated with the Mahasi Sayadaw lineage of Burmese vipassana.
00:14 - How to note: A clear acknowledging followed by a few seconds of intent focusing
00:55 - If what you have acknowledged immediately disappears that's an insight into vanishing
01:19 - How to label: Think or say a word that describes what you are noting
The function of a label is to prevent spacing out, facilitate noting which is designed to facilitate mindfulness.
02:25 - Standard options while noting
03:26 - Difficulties in practice? Which techniques are you doing and which options have you used to deal with the challenge?
04:00 - With the clear acknowledging phase you can speak the label out loud, mentally think a label, not label, use finger labels
04:35 - Use spoken labels that are strong, medium or sub-vocalized
05:22 - Use labels in a gentle, matter-of-fact manner
05:47 - An equanimous labeling voice can help an emotional freak-out
06:57 - Not too fast, not too slow
07:16 - Average when you have rapid-fire sensations
08:02 - If the breath and labels sync
08:38 - Repeating the same noting tends to slow down the internal clock and make it more likely you'll notice vanishings
09:20 - Repeat until gone
10:14 - Internalizing all the variations will help you deal with the bulk of sensory challenges
