I'll explain and show you how I set up and poured a concrete approach or apron in front of my garage doors on my pole barn. I used the tractor to scrape out the excess gravel and sand to get my 4" depth. I then used 2x4s to form the slab along with expansion joint against the barn front and an existing slab and deck.
Any loose fill that is added is then compacted and a rebar grid on 2' centers was installed. I ordered 8.5 yards of concrete to complete this slab in one pour. We used a 2x4 for a screed board and then used a bull float and Fresno to make the slab smooth.
Being an outdoor slab I didn't want it too smooth so when the concrete was still just a little soft, I used a finishing broom to make the perfect outdoor nonskid texture.
The last step was removing the form boards and cutting a control joint both ways down the center of the slab. If the concrete wants to crack hopefully it'll be happy cracking along the control joint.
