Salton Sea, Salvation Mountain, Slab City

I can't help to feel conflicted about this area. So many YouTubers have been promoting the eclectic artwork from Bombay Beach at the Salton Sea to Slab City, but I must say, the eerie silence in this area left me feeling very uncomfortable.

We started this road trip leaving Indio and driving to Yuma passing along the East side of the Salton Sea.

The Salton Sea is the largest lake in California, and it was created on accident by the California Development company in the early 1900’s as an ambitious irrigation project that built canals from the Colorado River to the Imperial Valley. What seemed a promising future for these farmers ended in disaster with re-occuring floods that breached the engineering controls and flooded the entire valley. A major undertaking with the help of the federal government finally sealed off the salton sea. In the 60’s this area was a major luxury destination and was marketed as the Salton Sea riviera, but the land locked lake eventually started to turn toxic, with agricultural runoff coming in and no way to restore with fresh water- the area was slowly abandoned.

In recent years the lake is receding significantly and the dust from the dry lakebed is causing serious health hazards for residents of the area. There’s an incredible documentary on the history and the environmental impacts, ideas to recover the area: Miracle in the Desert: The Rise and Fall of the Salon Sea- Documentary, Written and directed by Greg Bassenian.
