THIS VIDEO: Susan Sontag had a love-hate relationship with the photographic medium - On Photography was a landmark book and remains one of the most influential publications on the subject. The response to this writing has been varied and polarised– she’ was the darling of the American east coast intellectuals and the avant guard, while many photographers and critics believe that her book was self-serving and just served as a vehicle for intellectual pontificating. Richard Avedon, once said that he sometimes believed that Sontag might be the enemy. she countered the criticism by suggesting that the defensiveness of the photography community, was proof of the merit of her arguments. I definitely have a few issues with her writing on photography, but I also think that if someone who is a good thinker dedicated time to delve deeply into a subject – then it’s worth paying attention to what they have to say. Her stance was very provocative and her attitude is that of a moralist and her focus is about the ethics of seeing.
