Getting lost in the woods can freak you out. Whether you get lost while hiking, your car breaks down in the middle of a road in a wilderness area, or for other reasons, surviving in the forest isn't easy, but it can be done. You must find drinking water, food, a shelter to sleep in, and a fire to cook and keep warm. When your basic physical needs are met, you can survive in the forest, then give a signal and wait for help. Look for a water source. The first thing to do to survive in the forest is to get drinking water. Look for signs of water around you, such as areas with green leaves, low areas where water may stagnate, and signs of wildlife such as animal tracks. This could indicate the presence of a river, stream, or body of water nearby. While getting drinking water is important for survival, be aware that not all water is safe to drink. If possible, treat your water before drinking it.[1]
If there are mountains in your vicinity, look for stagnant water at the foot of the cliff.
The appearance of insects such as flies and mosquitoes indicates that there is water around you.
Water that is high in oxygen (such as waterfalls or large rapids) is usually safer than water that is stationary or slow flowing.
Water that comes from a source is usually much safer, although it can also be contaminated with bacteria and minerals.
Remember, all water should be considered unsafe if it has not been treated. Even clear water can contain disease and be dangerous if consumed.
