One of the hardest parts of lawn care is managing disease in your lawn. It can arrive at any time of the year and can quickly kill large sections of turf.

If you’ve properly managed your irrigation, fertilizer, equipment, and the insects in your lawn and you still have discoloration and or dead spots there is a good chance you have a disease problem.
You first want to look for symptoms of the disease, such as lesions, that will show on the grass blade. For example Kentucky Bluegrass can get noticeable yellow lesions called leaf spot.

The other thing to look for are signs of the disease, such as the cotton looking mycelium in Pythium Blight, or the spider web looking mycelium you might see with dollar spot. There are countless diseases that can affect your lawn and the main ones that I see people struggle with are leaf spot, dollar spot brown patch, rust, red thread and Pythium Blight.

Syngenta has a nice online resource that you can use to read descriptions of these diseases and see pictures of what they look like. I'll leave a link to that website in the description below.

Signs and symptoms of diseases tend to occur when conditions are just right. There are always pathogens in the soil and it is only when conditions are right that the pathogens will attack your lawn. Some of the conditions that can trigger a disease outbreak would be high humidity, changes in the seasons, persistent moisture in the canopy, stress due to lack of nutrients, or poor mowing practices.
