In this episode of Pro Tips, Mike Glover, a former Special Forces operator and the owner of Fieldcraft Survival, gives you advice about the idea of a gear loadout and the importance of having things partitioned based on circumstance, and how to pack a duffel bag for a specific purpose based on size and intent, including how to best use 20-, 40-, and 80-liter Fieldcraft Survival duffels.

“What bags do you use for travel? What are the bags that you use for overlanding? What are the bags that you use for camping? Those all could be different variations of bags and equipment,” Glover says. “And I want you to think about your vehicle as the bugout platform that transports logistics that allows you to get out of a bad situation.”

First, Glover says the most important thing to keep in mind is having an intended purpose for gear loadouts and integrating them appropriately.

“Loadout is super important,” Glover says. “These are the things that are going to save my butt. This isn’t just for a rig; this is for travel, this is for your safehouse, this is for everyday carry. Start thinking like this to organize your equipment the best way you know how and all of the things that paint the picture f your life and your routines.”

“I like to pack my loadout bags and I have them standing by. And I use them for overlanding and camping, but I also have them in my rig just in case. A combination of Goose Gear which is the drawer systems that I like, and then the right equipment in the loadout I integrate. And that doesn't change for me.”

First, Glover outlines his 20-liter Fieldcraft bag that he calls a “man packable everyday carry” bag.

“That’s what I carry every single day. It’s close and accessible to me in my rig. This would be the bag that I put on the passenger seat,” Glover says before detailing the pack’s attributes and the fact that like every pack the company makes, it includes integrated survival and med pouches. The 20-liter pack also makes an excellent range bag.

“This is my, ‘Hey, crap’s just hit the fan; I’m grabbing this’ bag and going, because it’s the most readily accessible,” he says. “It’s also the most convenient to carry. I would use this for a range bag as well and you could pack a truck gun in this [...] a SIG MPX could fit inside of this conveniently and I purposely and intentionally made it that size.”

Glover then moves on to showing you how to pack a duffel bag with a 40-liter capacity, double the capacity of the smallest bag he carries.

“This is heavier than my 20-liter and not the bag that I'm going to bug out with. This is a little bit more deliberate,” he adds.

Next up is the 80-liter pack, which again doubles the capacity of the next smallest bag.

“These bags have a slick surface on the bottom where you can carry all your dirty stuff. If I’m carrying maintenance [gear], ropes, recovery gear, shackles, tire repair kits, all of that stuff is going inside of that 80-liter dirty bag,” Glover says. “And in the case of my Land Cruiser, I have it on top of my roof in my storage container; I might have it in the back of my truck. It doesn't need to be readily accessible. In a way, I don't want it really accessible, because it's likely the kit that I'm going to need when I'm stuck in the mud and need access to the recovery strap that I'm going to put on the front bumper anyway, so being outside the rig is no problem.”
