When it came time to choose what costume we would wear for Halloween in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, there were only two names we needed to know… Ben Cooper and Collegeville. Between the two, every licensed character under the sun was an option for your Halloween costume of choice. A Collegeville or Ben Cooper mask, fragile and inaccurate as it was, would be all a Gen X kid needed to step into the role of his or her favorite character when paired with the sometimes surreal smocks that accompanied them.

We look back at the companies that used plastic smocks and vacuformed masks to create vintage Halloween empires that influenced multiple generations of children.
